Select a first (inner) box that is at least 25 percent bigger than the item and a second (outer) box that is at least 25 percent bigger than the first box.

Add a layer of packing material (foam or peanuts) to the bottom of the first box. Place the item inside the box.

Fill the spaces between the wrapped item and the box walls with packing material. The item should not touch the box walls at any point. Here is my first box filled to the top.

Lightly seal the first box with a single strip of packing tape. You may need to reopen the box before shipping.
